like sure it’s nice to have more people identify with the palestinian cause more than ever before but the fact that even “liberal” politicians like senator cory booker can claim that BDS is inherently anti-semitic and is a significant contributor to anti-semitism in the united states is disheartening. what a joke. look to the white supremacists and your own fucking president before claiming that a non-violent boycott of brands along the lines of BDS is the reason that anti-semitism exists in the US

“The flag I was carrying is the same one I always hold in all the other protests I’ve attended. My friends make fun of me, saying it is easier to throw rocks without holding a flag in the other hand, but I got used to it.

If I get killed, I want to be wrapped in the same flag. We are demanding our right of return, and protesting for our dignity and the dignity of our future generation.”

Stop romanticising that viral image of a Palestinian protester – it’s not a poetic moment

“Romanticising the image of a desperate man taking on an army allows us to justify its circumstances and distract ourselves from the grim truth that, in the real world, David rarely defeats Goliath. Aed could die today, tomorrow, or the week after that. If he keeps protesting, it is almost an inevitability.

“In the most tasteless responses, social media users have remarked on Aed’s chiselled jaw and physique. This overt fetishisation of his suffering is obscene, but the idea that the pain and anguish of marginalised groups is a price worth paying for beautiful art is a notion far older than even the paintings of Delacroix.

“From Asad’s chemical weapon attacks in Syria, to the bodies of refugee children washed up on the beaches of Europe, images have a radical, empathy-spreading power that can change the world. But the flippant reaction this particular shot, of someone literally risking being shot, represents our growing detachment from pain and lack of collective responsibility for it.

“Don’t let this photograph fool you: there is nothing beautiful or poetic about the oppression of Palestinians. Beyond the lens, the constant misery of wasted life and unnecessary death in Gaza continues – we must not let that drift out of focus.”

Dany stroked [Missandei’s] hair. “Say the word, my sweet, and I will send you from this awful place. I will find a ship somehow and send you home. To Naath.”

I would sooner stay with you. On Naath I’d be afraid. What if the slavers came again? I feel safe when I’m with you.”

Safe. The word made Dany’s eyes fill up with tears. “I want to keep you safe.” Missandei was only a child. With her, she felt as if she could be a child too. (A Dance with Dragons, Daenerys II)

I wanted to make a list for myself of some of the various types of alcohol in ASOIAF (ABV = alcohol by volume, as measured in RL, which may not be indicative of the fantasy equivalents)

  • beer (2%-12% ABV)
  • mead (8%-16% ABV)
  • wine (9%-16% ABV)
  • strongwine / fortified wine (15% – 20% ABV)
  • spiced liqueur from Qarth, served in tall fluted glasses (15%-55% ABV)
  • brandy from Tyrosh (35%-60% ABV)
  • rum from the Summer Isles (37.5%-80% ABV)
  • (assuming absinthe is similar to) Shade of the Evening (45% – 90% ABV)

Other things in the category of “Just fuck me up”

  • myrish firewine – this person suggested it might be something like tequila with peppers, if so (30% – 60% ABV)
  • milk of the poppy / opiate / morphine
  • dreamwine – wine with sweet sleep (narcotic sedative)

I think dreamwine is wine + milk of the poppy – it requires sweetening
with honey to taste good
, which wouldn’t be the case with sweetsleep.
Also people are given cups of it night after night, which also wouldn’t be the case with
sweetsleep
. I believe it’s GRRM’s equivalent of laudanum, opium dissolved in alcohol, which is very bitter.

Shade of the evening is much more hallucinogenic than absinthe ever was. I don’t think there’s any alcohol in it at all, it’s not said to be distilled. It may be based on salvia divinorum, or maybe the legendary soma. Though if it is based on salvia, it might be a tincture (which can increase the hallucinogenic effects), in which case there might be alcohol in it… but the ABV strength would be irrelevant to the effects of the plant itself.

More drugs and alcohol if you need them. (Um, not if you need them. If you need them for writing. You know what I mean.)
